Becoming A Subject of Emptiness through the Buddhist Bow Practice: A Lacanian Perspective

This research investigates ‘Becoming the Subject’ through the Bow Practice of the Korean Buddhist tradition in light of the Lacanian theory of the subject. In this research, the subject is defined as Bodhisattva, the subject of emptiness described in the Mahāyāna Buddhist treatise, the Diamond sūtra. analyse the Bow Practice, my paper explores the relationships and dynamics between the subject, the ego, the other and the Other in the Lacanian system, comparing these concepts with the principle of Anātman in the Diamond sūtra. The Buddhist Bow Practice symbolizes extinguishing the imaginary ego (ātma-saṃjñā) and generating the true subject, which is composed of repeated bodily acts carried out within the framework of dependent co-arising. Consequently, this paper illustrates, in terms of the Lacanian theory of subjectivity, how the Buddhist Bow Practice makes it possible for a subject of emptiness to emerge and attain Anātman, thereby escaping from the imaginary ego. |
