| Summary: | 종교단체가 정부뿐만 아니라 시민사회의 다른 결사체가 할 수 없는 공익활동을 하는 것은 우리 사회의 다원성과 공공성을 증대하는 데 매우 중요하다. 이 글은 종교단체의 공익활동에 대한 연구로서, 한국에서 아직 제대로 연구되지 않은 신흥 불교단체인 한국 SGI(Soka Gakai International)의 공익활동의 내용을 살펴보고, 이를 추동하는 교리와 조직 미션의 근거를 고찰하는 것이 목적이다. 연구는 한국 SGI에 대한 연구가 제한되어 있어 연구문헌 외에 조직에서 발행하는 신문이나 팜플렛을 활용하였고, 기획자 및 회원에 대한 심층면접과 참여관찰을 추가로 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 한국 SGI는 다양한 영역에서 왕성하게 활동하고 있었으나, 주로 서비스생산 영역에 집중되어 있었다. 따라서 주창(主唱)활동(advocacy)이나 대안사회 활동은 적었다. 국제적인 활동이나 거버넌스(governance)를 통한 공익활동도 빈약한 편이었다. 한국 SGI가 중시하는 『법화경』이나 종조 니치렌(日蓮)의 경전인 『어서』, 그리고 각종 교학에서는 공익활동을 추동할 근거가 풍부한데, 여기서는 만인성불(萬人成佛) 사상, 개인과 사회를 하나의 관계망으로 바라보는 의정불이(依正不二), 자행화타(自行化他)의 수행원리, 현세를 성불의 국토로 바라보는 사바즉적광(裟婆卽寂光) 등 네 가지를 살펴보았다. 그리고 공익활동을 추동하는 조직 미션으로는 이케다(池田大作) SGI 회장이 강조하는 휴머니즘, 교류와 대화, 사회발전의 강조 등에 초점을 두어 고찰하였다. 종교단체의 공익활동이 교학을 어떻게 해석하고 미션을 어떻게 구성하는가에 의해 영향을 받는다는 점에서, 앞으로 이에 대한 연구를 통해 조직의 정책 차원에서 종교단체의 공익활동을 강화할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. It is important that religious organizations work for our society to improve our societies’ plurality and public interest that civil organizations or governments cannot cover. This paper aimed at researching on public interest activities performed by religious organizations, especially Korea Soka Gakai International (KSGI) which is not only a newer but also an unwell-known Buddhist group in Korea. This research approached two aspects: one is to look into the public activities performed by KSGI, the other is to examine the foundation of its doctrine and organizational mission. Due to limitation of KSGI’s research informations, I dealt with newspapers and various brochures published by KSGI. In addition, I interviewed KSGI’s members and participated as an observer in the fields where KSGI works for the public interest activities. As a result of my analysis, it is assumed that although KSGI has actively performed on various fields, a tendency is shown that it mainly focused on the service output fields, but activities for advocacies or alternative communities have been relatively few. It is also observed that international activities or public activities through governance have been limited. For KSGI, there are many doctrinal basis on performing public activities through Lotus Sutra that is the most important text and Nichiren’s teachings. In this paper, I examined four elements: inherent potential to attain Buddha-hood, practice for oneself and others, oneness of life and its environment, and the Saha world being the land of eternally tranquil light. As for the organizational mission, I examined three elements that influenced the public interest activities of KSGI, humanism, interaction and dialogue, and social development. It is easily notified that public activities of Religious communities can be shaped by not only how to interpret its doctrine but also how to organize its mission. From these facts, this research will reinforce public activities of religious communities in terms of policy level. |
