Description
Summary:This article will share how the Archdiocese of Jakarta, Indonesia, dealt with garbage as one main ecological problem in Jakarta. The problem was integrated into ecclesial and social life, focusing on how it became a golden opportunity to grow in faith and to work together as human beings. The ecological problems urge all the faithful and all religions to work together hand in hand since the earth is a common home for all creatures. Such simple experiences in dealing with garbage problems can teach the faithful many lessons, beyond the technical matter of garbage. The Archdiocese of Jakarta was involved in the effort through this green-religious encounter. In the case of Jakarta, it started with the problem of how garbage is disposed of and treated, which later evolved into a new habitus of separating garbage. It gives a personal encounter that could build trust among people with different faiths and religions, which, in turn, could serve to diminish religious radicalism. Besides, there is also a development in the self-awareness of the Church vis-a-vis society and personal faith throughout the ecological effort.
