| Summary: | This article explores a neglected aspect of conflict that threatens cultural heritage: 'frozen' conflict zones. These are geographical areas where armed conflict has ended in a stalemate and without a formalised peace treaty, often resulting in an unrecognised nation state and/or ongoing tension. This complex political environment places strain on cultural heritage both directly through the possibility of damage during hot conflict and/or the threat of cultural genocide and indirectly due to ignorance or indifference. This article explores some of the current, complex realities of cultural heritage through a snapshot of South Ossetia/Tskhinvali region and Abkhazia, self-declared independent nation states sometimes considered to be part of Georgia. |
