Description
Summary:The architectural remains of two residential complexes, separated by a pathway or ancient street, have been excavated over the course of four excavation seasons. The first complex, which is almost completely excavated, consists of 19 rooms, three courtyards and three staircases. The second complex consists of at least nine rooms; however none of them has been excavated completely. The rooms of both complexes are located very close to the two excavated churches of the Byzantine-Umayyad period; therefore we believe that they constitute part of a very large monastery. The walls of all the unearthed rooms are built of stones directly on top of bedrock, and those built closest to the two churches are either abutting or adjoining the churches' external walls. The archaeological evidence indicates that the two churches (the subject of previously published articles) were built during the 4th cent. C.E. and continued in use until the end of the Umayyad period. This present article aims to shed light on the houses of the Byzantine-Umayyad period excavated at Ḫirbet eṭ-Ṭīre, their layout, composition, and the building techniques employed.
