| Summary: | "In 1937, Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) asked his friend, journalist and critic, Clifford Bax (1886-1962), if he knew of a suitable artist to illustrate his definitive treatment of 'the Tarot of the Egyptians' which he envisioned as 'an Encyclopaedia of all serious 'occult' philosophy [...] which will determine the entire course of mystical and magical thought for the next 2000 years. Accordingly, Bax, whose two friends, Lesley Blanch (1904-2007) and Meum Stewart (1895-1957), had expressed an interest in meeting 'the Worst Man in the World', organised a dinner party at the London R.A.C. Club and added Frieda, Lady Harris (1877-1962), to the guest list. Harris had already established herself as a talented artist, and her fascination with mysticism and the emerging esoteric trends of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, made her an ideal candidate. As a result of this meeting, a remarkable partnership was formed. The Book of Thoth was Crowley's last major magical work and Harris's Tarot paintings are a fundamental component thereof"-- |
