| Summary: | The purpose of this article is to address the development of mystique based on the short story Substância by João Guimarães Rosa, in which the presence of the female figure is essential for the couple's upward movement. With this objective in mind, we seek to focus on an attentive and careful reading of the story, in order to listen to the mystique that allows itself to resonate. Preserving the autonomy of the work, we note that the development of the mystique rests on the love nurtured by the couple. In this movement, the character Maria Exita becomes relevant as a guide who leads Sionésio in his conversion until the love between the couple elevates them to the encounter of cosmic unity in an epiphanic moment. At the end we present a parallel of the role played by the Rosean character in tune with two characters from the Western tradition: the Holy Mary of Christianity and the priestess Diotima in the dialogue The Banquet by Plato. |
