Description
Summary:This paper examines whether the symbol Sophia can help sustain a path of dialogue between Christians and the followers of Dao. A close reading of Merton's Hagia Sophia and The Way of Chuang Tzu reveals three thematic similarities in his characterizations of Dao and Sophia as well as one significant difference. It also reveals a concrete sophianic stance for dialogue exemplified in Merton's relationship with John C. H. Wu and D. T. Suzuki. The paper concludes by suggesting that Sophia will be conducive to interreligious dialogue to the extent that it produces living exemplars who can assume a sophianic attitude toward dialogue.
