| Summary: | For 76 years, political parties have presented their election manifestos prior to each federal election. In order to help voters, political parties should present their positions clearly and understandably. However, will the parties have succeeded in doing so in the 2025 German federal election? And how comprehensible were those election manifestos in the past? These questions are addressed in a readability analysis of 90 election manifestos for all 21 federal elections since 1949. The results show that election manifestos - as the result of internal party negotiation processes among experts - are usually difficult to understand. They are often characterized by a specialized language. In addition, they often contain convoluted sentences and "word monstrosities". In this manner, political parties miss an opportunity to communicate successfully. Seit 76 Jahren präsentieren Parteien vor jeder Bundestagswahl ihre Wahlprogramme. Damit sie den Wähler:innen als Orientierung und Entscheidungshilfe dienen können, sollten Parteien ihre Positionen klar und verständlich darstellen. Nur: Ist das den Parteien bei der Bundestagswahl 2025 gelungen? Und wie verständlich waren Wahlprogramme früher? Diese Fragen beantwortet eine Verständlichkeitsanalyse von 90 Wahlprogrammen zu allen 21 Bundestagswahlen seit 1949. Dabei zeigt sich: Wahlprogramme sind - als Ergebnis parteiinterner Aushandlungsprozesse unter Expert:innen - sprachlich meist schwer verständlich. Oft sind sie von Fachsprache geprägt. Hinzu kommen Schachtelsätze und "Wortungetüme". Damit vergeben Parteien eine Chance, erfolgreich zu kommunizieren. |
