| Summary: | In this essay, I explore the interplay of language, translation, transmission, and interpretation in the Septuagint’s text of Ps 4. Focusing on three salient moments where the Greek departs from its typical relationship to extant Hebrew witnesses — in Ps 4:3, 7, and 8 — I chart the possible explanations for such departure. I do so under two main rubrics: the Septuagint as translation — where the translator’s reading, interpreting, and translation practices are responsible for perceived differences — and the Septuagint as witness to a Hebrew text — where perceived differences arise because the Hebrew Vorlage of the Septuagint contained a text different to the text(s) in our extant Hebrew witnesses. |
