Description
Summary:Our article takes up once again the well-known question of the two traditional and academic approaches to the Talmud, in the light of the most recent work on the Babylonian Talmud. After general considerations on the literary and historical study of the Talmud and the particular case of the synagogue, we will devote a large part of our discussion to the Babylonian Talmud as it appears in contemporary research, i.e. as a text that is both late and representative of a particular form of rabbinism. We conclude with the thorny problem ofrabbinic attributions and narratives, which at first sight is the major point of divergence between traditional and academic studies of the Talmud. The three examples of zuhama, literacy and Jewish Paganism nevertheless open the possibility for a more nuanced treatment of the question of the historical reliability of rabbinic sources.
