| Summary: | This study offers new insight into the Jewish Fighting Organization (Żydowskiej Organizacji Bojowej, ŻOB) which operated in occupied Częstochowa against the Germans during 1942–1943. The study views the ŻOB through the landscapes of the resistance it created, and argues that the ŻOB command in Warsaw had a great influence on the strategy and tactics of the ŻOB in Częstochowa. Jewish and Polish facilitators played an important role in the ŻOB’s activity and arming efforts. The study discusses new meanings for the Jewish resisters installed in the places that served them: an agricultural farm in Żarki that allowed for reorganization and initial talks on armed resistance; a furniture warehouse and workshops near the Częstochowa ghetto that facilitated rescue operations and the build-up of the ŻOB’s modest force; a tunnel that the ŻOB dug from the northern edge of the small ghetto to the ‘Aryan’ side which featured a collective effort to use the subterranean dimension. These places demonstrated the ŻOB’s ability to operate between the Germans’ spaces of domination and to maintain mobility in spite of the Germans’ tightly controlled locations. |
