Zusammenfassung:According to many scholars, Pakistan is a dangerous country where fieldwork often resembles an ‘obstacle course’. But beyond the banal impediments faced by researchers working on the Muslim world, the author’s fieldwork, which focuses on the political dimensions of Sufism, the mystical tradition in Islam, came up against yet another difficulty: that of challenging the master narrative ‘good quietist Sufi Islam’ versus ‘bad radical Islamism’. These widespread essentialist representations of the apolitical and tolerant nature of Sufism are viewed in the critical light of the many interactions between Sufism and Islamism.
