Description
Résumé:The religious trance as an object of scientific research has acquired, over a period of time, various perspectives, from the view of primitive savage practices, to the demonization by the religious institution as well as its pathologization by the field of psychiatric and psychological sciences. Being the object of a varied literature that extends for more than a century, the trance has come to be seen, in the Brazilian context, as the central feature of the Afro-Brazilian religiosities and for being such a complex phenomenon has fascinated the anthropologists and researchers of the religion all around the world. The purpose of this article is to reflect on religious trance and its relationship with afro-Brazilian religions. It is a reflection about the religious trance, having as reference scientific articles and texts that deal with the theme. Two reports of sons-of-saints were also annexed in order to maximize the study. This research leads us to affirm that the trance is seen as a common practice in many societies and perceived a founding element for Afro-Brazilian worldviews. The study points out some dominant perspectives of analysis between them to the biological, social and phenomenological perspectives.
