| Summary: | Initialement conçu comme une recherche sur l’idée de pureté et les clichés (topoi) associés dans l’hagiographie latine antérieure à l’an 1000, cet article étudie trois des Actes des apôtres dits apocryphes, les seuls à présenter des données utiles pour la recherche sur le thème proposé. Dans le contexte plus large de la production hagiographique latine de la fin de l’Antiquité et du haut Moyen Âge, les Actes de Pierre et de Paul (BHL 6657), les Actes de Jacques frère du Seigneur (BHL 4093) et les Actes de Matthieu (BHL 5690) montrent les particularités d’une idée du christianisme encore en formation et liée aux racines juives du message de Jésus. Ces textes ont également une disposition spécifique envers le paganisme, qui rappelle ouvertement la question de la dispute entre Pierre et Paul et offre de nouvelles données pour l’évaluation de la mentalité proto-chrétienne. Les Actes « apocryphes » des apôtres mettent en lumière des caractères spécifiques des premiers récits hagiographiques, à mi-chemin entre la production qui deviendra plus tard le « discours hagiographique » communément entendu et la tradition du roman antique tardif, mais en même temps distincte de ces deux genres littéraires. Initially conceived as a research on the concept of purity and the related commonplaces in Latin hagiography prior to the year 1000, the present paper investigates three of the so-called apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, the only hagiographies containing useful data on the proposed topic. In the broader context of late antique and early medieval Latin hagiographical production, the Deeds of Peter and Paul (BHL 6657), James the Less (BHL 4093) and Matthew (BHL 5690) show the peculiarities of an in-shaping idea of Christianity, still linked to the Jewish roots of Jesus’ message. These texts have as well a specific disposition towards paganism, which openly recalls the question of the dispute between Peter and Paul and offers new elements for evaluating proto-Christian mentality. The apocryphal Acts of the Apostles highlight specific characters of the first hagiographical narratives, halfway between the production that will later become the commonly understood "hagiographic discourse" and the tradition of the late antique novel, but at the same time distinct from both these literary genres. |
