| Summary: | A pesquisa científica contemporânea sobre as crenças e experiências religiosas tem, cada vez mais, enfatizado a importância de reconhecê-las como fenômenos naturais submetidos aos mesmos mecanismos evolutivos, cognitivos e neuronais que caracterizam outras formas do comportamento humano. De uma perspectiva evolucionista, tais crenças e experiências só se tornaram possíveis graças ao desenvolvimento e à ação concatenada de várias estruturas no cérebro, em função das exigências próprias do processo de adaptação biológica. A Ciência Cognitiva da Religião tem também indicado como a experiência religiosa pode ser explicada a partir de processos perceptivos, linguísticos e cognitivos básicos. Tais abordagens parecem cada vez mais convergir para uma compreensão das origens naturais da religião, ainda que por vezes divirjam nos detalhes e recortes utilizados. O presente artigo tem como objetivo apresentar uma revisão dessas contribuições, discutindo sua fundamentação empírica e suas limitações teóricas e metodológicas. Os autores abordam as funções cognitivas que estariam na gênese da crença em agentes e fenômenos sobrenaturais e na vivência do ritual religioso. São também apresentados estudos sobre as bases neurofisiológicas da crença e da experiência religiosa, incluindo investigações recentes sobre sua modificação por meio de neuromodulação. Os autores concluem discutindo implicações dessas pesquisas para o campo mais amplo da ciência da religião. Religious beliefs and experiences are increasingly being recognized by contemporary scientific research as natural phenomena, subjected to the same evolutionary, cognitive and neural mechanisms that characterize other forms of human behaviour. From an evolutionary perspective, such beliefs and experiences became possible only by the development and the concatenation of various structures in the brain, given the specific requirements of the biological adaptation process. The cognitive science of religion has also been indicating how religious experience could be explained on the basis of fundamental perceptive, linguistic and cognitive processes. These approaches seem all to converge to a comprehensive understanding of the natural origins of religion, although sometimes they diverge in terms of details and perspectives. This paper presents a review of the contributions in this research area, and discusses their empirical foundations and theoretical and methodological limitations. The authors review the cognitive functions presumed to be in the genesis of religious rituals and beliefs in supernatural agents and phenomena. The paper also presents the literature on the neurophysiology of religious beliefs and experiences, including recent investigations concerning the neuroestimulation/neuromodulation of beliefs. The authors discuss the implications of these studies to the broader field of the science of religion. |
