| Summary: | Um dos pressupostos centrais do estudo cognitivo do pensamento religioso é o de que podemos explicar a tendência humana em conceber os agentes sobre-humanos encontrados em diferentes culturas. Não obstante se esses agentes são uma única divindade ou muitas distintas, se são ancestrais ou fantasmas de indivíduos recém-falecidos, os processos psicológicos que tornam tais concepções persuasivas e naturais às mentes humanas são os mesmos e podem ser analisados empiricamente. Sob uma perspectiva cognitiva, entender como esses preceitos universais de nossa espécie se combinam com diferentes circunstâncias históricas se faz necessário para uma melhor explanação das ideias e condutas religiosas presentes nas mais diversas comunidades humanas. A central assumption in the cognitive study of religious thought is that we can explain the human propensity to imagine the superhuman agents found in the belief systems of different cultures. Whether these agents are a unique god, many distinct ones, ancestors, or the ghosts of recently deceased individuals, the psychological processes that make such notions compelling and natural to human minds are the same and can be studied experimentally. Understanding how these universal cognitive principles combine with different historical circumstances is required to better explain the diversity of religious thought and behavior. |
