Description
Summary:The exposed members of Pussy Riot became symbols of the disruptive power of revolutionary art in a climate of repression upon their arrests following their performance at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, yet the controversy of their conviction and imprisonment overshadowed the very message for which they were sentenced. Close inspection of their lyrics and court statements reveals Pussy Riot's deliberate, consistent, and sophisticated engagement with feminist hermeneutics in their public opposition to the leadership and policies of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill I. In addition to protesting Putin, Pussy Riot's performances, court statements, and letters from prison critique the entanglement of church and state and their sexist, hierarchical structures by employing an egalitarian praxis of scriptural interpretation and feminist theory.
